One of the defining characteristics of Modernism (the post industrial revolution western-world), with regard to art history, is the theory laden-ness of art – art and hermeneutics come together and are inseparable. I like to make the argument that cinema is the most defining art of the modern era for no other reason than it was born out of modernism for modernism. Cinema served to advance the spread of 20th century-defining doctrines (Marxism/Leninism in Soviet Russia – an interesting relationship between the film/propaganda industry and the railroads) and the advancement of art theory and practice itself (the French impressionists). The cinema absorbs the other arts; theatre, literature, the composed and framed image and music. The cinema is impossible without capital and technology. Even the most avant-garde and experimental cinema to stand in the hall of cinematic fame (Stan Brakhage, Jean Epstein for example) was shot on Kodak…

Over the course of the past few years, the conversation focusing on “flipping” the classroom has been active and at times controversial. The traditional notion of flipping re-imagines and restructures the teacher’s role of delivering content during class time.  Rather than using the class time to lecture or delivery content from text, teachers embrace technology to distribute content to students in digital format – videos, multi-media presentations outside of the classroom space. In such a practice (insert the controversy) the big question flourishes: What happens with class time when content is delivered during home time? For some teachers who are liberated from the disconnection from traditional content delivery, the flipped framework provides them with an opportunity to enrich student experience through collaborative activities where “homework” is done in class. Thus, the classroom becomes a time where they can support active learning, ignite curiosity and ensure that next steps are meaningful…

Introduction

I have been interested in film production and editing ever since I took two years of video classes in high school. After learning to digitally record and edit video, I developed a new hobby and passion. Seeing Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera in my modernism LCC course absolutely blew my mind. I thought setting up a digital camera, recording the right shots, and digitally editing on a computer was hard, but it is nothing compared to the true talent seen in Vertov’s modern film. The hour-long masterpiece was full of such innovative creativity that I absolutely had to analyze it for my semester project. The rest of this blog will briefly explain the purpose of his film and the recording and editing equipment used. Then it will examine five of the major film techniques he relied on to make his work a masterpiece of the time period…
